To allow the newly created guardians the freedom to climb between the trees, children constructed ladders and bridges some of which were suspended between branches, others rested against the feet of trees to allow access from the forest floor.

Overlooking the smaller figures, nestled into the roots of a fallen tree, a larger figure adorned with a crown, necklace and colourful eye reaches for his hand carved staff. The children and adults gathered to pass the figure’s wooden heart from person to person each being given the chance to whisper a wish into the heart before passing it on and whether these personal messages were mischievous or heartfelt were unimportant as the figures heart was placed into his hollow torso.

Within moments the children were engaged in other activities, enjoying the freedom and adventure that this environment offers, watched over by the guardians of the forest.

<![CDATA[Work Starts on Gorebridge Railway Line]]>http://www.gorebridge.org.uk/whats_on/blog/the_railway1/ http://www.gorebridge.org.uk/whats_on/blog/the_railway1/#When:12:00:21Z I hear the Train a Coming its rolling round the bend (Johnny Cash) ……

On Monday 30th January contractors from Network Rail began clearing trees and shrubs along the old railway line approach to Gorebridge. This work is in preparation for the new Waverley Line slated to be fully operational by 2014.

Local residents living adjacent to the track by the road bridge on Station Road have informed the site management of a badger set located beside the track. We at GCDT welcome the arrival of the train that will further aid the social and economic regeneration of Gorebridge. We would however encourage network rail to consult and inform local residents prior to undertaking sensitive work like cutting back trees. Consideration must also be given to the flora and fauna and the badger family.

The Building of the Gorebridge Community Hub Project has taken a giant leap forward. Social Investment Fund Scotland has today confirmed an investment of £500,000 made up of a £250,000 grant and £250,000 loan the latter to be paid back once the building is operational and generating revenue.

Gorebridge Development Trust Manager David Thomas said

This is fantastic news for the community in Gorebridge and Midlothian at large. The Development Trust has been working tirelessly to raise the £2.5 million pounds needed to bring this project to fruition. We anticipate that a much needed community building will breathe new life into the economy in Gorebridge creating new jobs and volunteering opportunities. I would like to thank Gorebridge Community Development Trust Chair Mr Archie Pacey MBE and all of our Trustees for their support. Special thanks go to our other funders Midlothian Council, Leader Tyne Esk + and The Big Lottery who have been supportive and patient during the long and challenging process of fund raising in a tough economic climate.

The next step for the design team at Gorebridge Community Development Trust is to start the Tender process and appointment of the Main contractor. Building should start early in 2012.
