New Housing

There are plans for extensive house building in and around Gorebridge over the next 5 – 10 years, more details of these will be uploaded soon.

New Railway Link with Edinburgh

The Waverley Railway Project is an initiative with the ultimate aim of re-establishing a rail link to provide a passenger transport service from Edinburgh to the central Borders area in Scotland by 2011. The Project is seen as the first phase of reinstating the entire rail link between Edinburgh and Carlisle, which was closed in 1969. The railway will have a station at Gorebridge allowing easy access to and from Edinburgh within 30 minutes. From more information on the Waverley Railway Project visit their website. The plan of the Station at Gorebridge is available below.

Gore Glen Improvements

Midlothian Council has been successful in its bid for Woodlands In and Around Towns Challenge Funding from the Forestry Commission. This, together with finances raised from the Scottish Forestry Grant Scheme and Landfill Tax enables the Council to move forward with its plans for improving the recreational, aesthetic and biodiversity value of the Glen.

Works began in January 2007 and be completed by the end of the year. The first phase will consist mainly of woodland works involving the removal of the non-native Lodgepole Pine with a view to replacing these with native trees. Extracted timber will be utilised locally as a source of fuel for heating the greenhouses at Vogrie nursery. The second phase will consist mainly of works to enhance the opportunities for recreation such as upgrading of paths, resurfacing the car park and creation of leaflets and other interpretative materials.

It is anticipated that forestry operations will not significantly affect access to the Glen, however temporary re-routing of paths may be necessary in the interest of public safety More information on the improvements at Gore Glen can be found in the Trust's office at Number 58.
