Gorebridge was developed during the 18th Century around the coal mining, limeworks and gunpowder industries. James Dewar of Vogrie was the main landowner and helped to development the area. Gorebridge had the first gundpowder mill in Scotland, Stobs Mill, established in 1793 of which the remains are in tact today.
The town was well served by the Edinburgh to Hawick railway line since 1847 and was very popular with visitors from Edinburgh, escaping the city to go walking in and around Gorebridge enjoying the views of the beautiful surrounding countryside and the Arniston Glen. Gorebridge has a deep history of which more information can be found on these history pages on a number of topics, such as Borthwick Castle, Newbyres Castle and Camp Wood Hill.
