Gorebridge Station

Gorebridge Station

In 1831 the coal owners of Midlothian formed the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway Company to enable them to get their coal into their markets in Edinburgh quicker and cheaper. The line ended at Dalhousie Mains, at a station called South Esk. The Marquis of Lothian constructed a bridge across the South Esk and continued the line to his pits at Bryans and Gowkshill.

Robert Dundas of Arniston wanting to increase the production and sales then the built a line from Arniston to connect to the line at Gowkshill.

In 1846 The North British Railways Company bought overt the Edinburgh and Dalkeith Railway Company and began to construct a railway line to Hawick capable of carrying steam trains. Gorebridge Station was opened in 1847. There was a siding which was used mainly by local coal merchants and farmers. The railway was well used by passengers and for the transporting of goods.

After nationalization in 1948, there came increased pressure to close loss-making lines. Soon this was the only one left in the area. Gorebridge station was closed to goods at the end of 1964 and was run as an unmanned station until is eventual closure at the beginning of 1969.
