Gorebridge Golf Club

Gorebridge Golf Club

19th June 1897 – 1919

Gorebridge golf course was on Catcune Farm beside the Borthwick Burn. Most of the members (paying an annual subscription of 10/-) were businessmen, including some from Edinburgh. J.S. Gibb, proprietor of the ironmonger’s shop in Gorebridge, was club captain for many years and Sandy Barclay, a miller at Catcune Mill, was secretary and treasurer.

The Middleton Cup, presented by H.E. (later Sir Edward) Moss of Middleton was the championship trophy. It was last played for in 1914. A championship medal was presented by Dr Inch and was wont three times in succession by Willie Know who got to keep it. The Pendreich medal was played for at monthly competitions.

The club never reopened after the First World War because, it is said, the farmer wanted a much bigger rent. This article printed in the Advertiser might explain why:

“Every season considerable damage is done to cereal and other crops in the fields adjoining the golf course through golfers and other wading through them in search of lost golf balls. This occurs not only during play but Sunday is one of the busiest days at the work. In spite of repeated warning this season it is again going on and the matter being now in the hands of the polices, it is hoped a conviction or two may put a stop to such reprehensible and destructive conduct".
