The Brown Building

The Brown Building is a former Victorian primary school home to several community groups. The building serves as a venue for public and private meetings, the GO youth project and various recreational classes.

Background

In 2008 the building was slated to be demolished by the local council threatening displacement of the user groups and leaving the area with no community facility.  Local intervention saw the council give tenancy to Gorebridge Community Development Trust who has since managed the building with the help of volunteers, operational costs being supported by rental from the user groups and charitable grants. This Brown Building is seen as a pathfinder project and an early exponent of the so called “Big Society”  community ownership in action !
